Salty connections:

Once you start looking salt really is everywhere!

• Locally the Lion Saltworks, which is undergoing restoration, demonstrates the production of salt by the ancient method of open pan evaporation.
• Nantwich Museum - Telling the story of Nantwich through the ages - Roman salt making, Tudor Nantwich's Great Fire, the Civil War Battle of Nantwich (1644), cheese-making and much more.
• Winsford Rock Salt Mine is Britain's oldest working mine. It lies almost 200m under the Cheshire countryside and has a fascinating history.

Although the Salt Museum is the only salt museum in the UK other museums feature salt in their local history:

• The Northwich & District Heritage Society is the largest of its kind in Cheshire with membership well over 450 people
• The Winsford and District Historical Society has many primary resources all of which are available to the public. Their website also provides details of upcoming events
• The River Weaver was canalised in the 18th century and the museum has a gallery all about the history of this fascinating river. If you want to find out more about the river in the past and how it is used and protected today the River Weaver Navigation Society website is the place to start
