Salty Facts!

  • The distance from the bottom of Winsford rock salt mine to the top of the winding gear is nearly the same height as Blackpool tower – 158 m! (518 ft)

  • Before the development of proprietary brands of toothpaste, salt was widely used by people to clean their teeth! Salt solution was also used as a mouthwash, eyewash and antiseptic.

  • There has been a Salt Museum in Northwich for 100 years!

  • 79% of all cargo on the River Weaver in 1732 was salt

  • 13,000 tonnes of salt are used on the 2,800 miles of road in Cheshire to keep traffic moving.
