Special Events for Schools
The Salt Museum holds several special events weeks throughout the year. Some may tie in with seasonal themes, or have links with the temporary exhibition programme, or may celebrate national events such as Science Week.
Special Schools Events for 2008
Monday 7 - Friday 11 July 2008 - Tudor Midsummer
Help the servants of a salt merchant's home prepare for a summer festival, lay the table for a feast, make some herbal medicines, assist the local militia and join in with games, music and dancing.
A full day workshop. We can accommodate up to 50 pupils and the price is £4 per pupil for Cheshire County Council schools.
Monday 3 - Tue 11 November 2008 - Remembrance
We are offering schools an opportunity to visit our special exhibition looking at the effect of the First World War on local people including artefacts and personal stories along with vivid illustrations of life in the trenches by W H Hutchings, a local artist who was there. We will provide a guide for a tour of the exhibition and space to gather afterwards along with notes to help provoke a thoughtful class discussion about why wars are fought and the concept of Remembrance. Expect to spend about 1.5 - 2 hours on the activities. The education staff will be pleased to discuss this further, email tom.hughes@cheshire.gov.uk or call 01606 271640. Monday 24 November - Tuesday 9 December 2008 - Tudor Christmas
Yuletide is fast approaching and the servants in the household of Mr Richard Meade, a wealthy salt merchant, need all the help they can get to prepare for the celebrations. Pupils will lay the table for a banquet, make scented spice bags, take part in a mummers' play, play period instruments and learn a bawdy dance and much more. This museum workshop lasts a whole day and costs £4 per child for Cheshire County Council schools.
Wednesday 10 - Wednesday 17 December 2008 - Christmas in the Workhouse
The Salt Museum is housed in the old Northwich Workhouse. Your pupils can take the role of Victorian pauper inmates and meet a range of characters from the workhouse. Discover the workhouse regime and dismal diet, have a lesson with the workhouse schoolmaster, try out the workhouse chores and prepare for the meagre Christmas festivities. Workshops last half a day and cost £3 per pupil for Cheshire County Council schools. You are welcome to stay on for the whole day and have a look around the rest of the museum at no extra charge.
Monday 20 April - Friday 3 May 2009 - Ghosts of the Mary Rose
A special outreach workshop travelling out to schools in Cheshire. Meet two of the men from King Henry VIII's flagship and find out about life on board. Prepare a cannon, assist the ship's surgeon and try out some music and dance. This half-day workshop is suitable for one class at a time, though we can manage 2 classes in a day if needed. Price is £120 for one workshop, or £180 for two on the same day.
Tuesday 16 - Friday 19 June 2009 - Experience Medieval Life
Discover life in Cheshire in the middle ages in this very hands-on workshop, Try out armour and weapons, role-play a pilgrimage and stories of saints, and play a wide range of period instruments with a travelling musician. We can accommodate up to 90 pupils per day. Price is £4 per pupil with a minimum charge of £200 per day (equivalent to 50 pupils attending).
