Special Events for Schools
The Salt Museum holds several special events weeks throughout the year. Some may tie in with seasonal themes, or have links with the temporary exhibition programme, or may celebrate national events such as Science Week.
Forthcoming special events for schools
Monday 23 November - Tuesday 8 December 2009 - Tudor Christmas
Yuletide is fast approaching and the servants in the household of Mr Richard Meade, a wealthy salt merchant, need all the help they can get to prepare for the celebrations. Pupils will lay the table for a banquet, make scented spice bags, take part in a mummers' play, play period instruments and learn a bawdy dance and much more. This museum workshop lasts a whole day and costs £4 per child for Cheshire West & Chester schools, (£4.60 per child for non-CW&C schools)
Wednesday 9 - Wednesday 16 December 2009 - Christmas in the Workhouse
The Salt Museum is housed in the old Northwich Workhouse. Your pupils can take the role of Victorian pauper inmates and meet a range of characters from the workhouse. Discover the workhouse regime and dismal diet, have a lesson with the workhouse schoolmaster, try out the workhouse chores and prepare for the meagre Christmas festivities. Workshops last a whole day and cost £4 per pupil for Cheshire West & Chester schools, (£4.60 per child for non-CW&C schools).
Wednesday 23 - Friday 25 June 2010 - Experience Medieval Life
These very special workshops allow your pupils to get to grips with life in medieval Cheshire. They will try on armour and helmets and handle swords and arrows to find out about the struggles and wars of the period. They'll then prepare for a pilgrimage, roleplay some saint's stories and find out about how religion affected everyday life. The pupils will also work with a musician and a huge range of medieval instruments to find out about the role of the minstrel in medieval society, in the market, in the workplace, as entertainer and even as spy. The pupils will get a chance to join in with the music to create some very evocative sounds of the era.
Also, watch out for special workshops in Spring 2010 exploring Cheshire Myths and Legends.
