Children's Holiday Events | Tea and a Talk | Visits and talks by The Friends of the Salt Museum | Cinema

There is an exciting programme of events at the Salt Museum, throughout the year. There are lots of holiday craft activities to keep you busy this year. Many are connected with our temporary exhibitions so you can get inspirations for your crafts from the displays. Workshops cost £1.30 per child and this includes a free look around the main museum displays. (Adults wanting to look around afterwards cost £2.50) You can drop into any workshop between 10am and 4pm unless stated otherwise.

Holiday events

Looking for something to do with your children or grandchildren during the holidays? Look no further - we have a variety of special activities taking place and they are included in your museum admission price. You may wish to buy a season ticket and take advantage of all of them or just pop in one day. The workshops run from 10am to 4pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and usually take 45 minutes to an hour to complete. Drop in any time you like between those times. Haunted Houses
Visit our special exhibition looking at vanished settlements of Cheshire and the stories of buildings long disappeared then make your own model of an ancient, and haunted, house.

Tales and Tiles
Hear the tales of a medieval visitor to nearby Vale Royal abbey and even join in in the legendary stories if you wish.  Then take inspiration from the medieval abbey tiles on display and create your own to take away.

Wed 7 & Thur 8 April 2010, 10am-4pm
Down the High Street
Choose some B&W images of Northwich shops and buildings, tint them with watercolours, then use them to create your own street scene mini theatre.

Workhouse Worries
The museum used to be the old Northwich Workhouse, meet some characters from the buildings past and find out about life here.  Then make a peg doll based on one of the workhouse characters.

Ancient Games
Learn how to play Fox & Geese, Merrills, Tafl and many more, then make your own game board and playing pieces.

Roman Soldier Day
Meet some Roman soldiers and find out about their life in the fort at Condate, (Roman Northwich).  Try on helmets and shields and ,ake your own Roman standard to carry away.

Roman Salt Making Day
Watch demonstrations of Roman style salt making and try out the crafts of butter and cheese making using some of the salt.  Follow in the steps of Northwich's Roman potter Maco, and make your own salt pot to take away.

Fabulous Felt
Try your hand at the ancient craft of felting and create your own unique piece of textile art.  A fascinating process and great fun too.

Beside the Seaside
The seaside comes to Northwich!  Join us for seaside entertainment, the coconut shy, laughing sailor and more.  Make your own Punch and Judy finger puppets too.  Bring a picnic and enjoy the day!

The Curious World of Professor Mace
The renowned Victorian explorer and adventurer Prof. Josiah Mace will be bringing his collection of intriguing antiquities and curiosities to the Salt Museum.  Be amazed at his tales of wondrous civilisations from across the world, from Egyptian Mummies to Aztec Skulls, adventure from the Wild West to the search for Atlantis.  Avid adventurers can also create a curiosity box to start their own collections.

Wed 25 & Thur 26 August 2010, 10am-4pm
Perky Penguins
Chill out this summer.  Visit the South Pole displays in the museum and make your own penguin model to take home.
 
All the above events are included as part of the usual admission prices. Free to season ticket holders.

Tea and a talk

Join us for afternoon tea on the last Wednesday of every month for an informal talk on a range of local topics. Talks begin at 3pm. £1.00 admission. 

27 January 2010 - Time Traveller, author Paul Hurley talks about the compilation of his recent "Through Time" books and some of his other writings.

24 February 2010 - Cheshire's Windmills, presented by Arthur Townsend

31 March 2010 - The Miller's Tale.  Tom Hughes explores the role of millers in folk tales and contrasts images of cheats and misers with the idea of the "jolly miller".

28 April 2010 - Post War Blues: Everyday life in the aftermath of World War 2, presented by curator Matt Wheeler

26 May 2010 - Brit Chic: Fashion on Film, 1946-89.  Celebrate the nation's knack for cutting edge couture with this kaleidoscopic film and TV survey of Post War British Fashion from the British Film Institute's National Archive.  From utility to utopia, high end to high street, 'Brit Chic' salutes the trends and trendsetters who heightened our sartorial senses and inspired today's trailblazing British designers.

Thurs 4 Feb - Vale Royal Abbey - A failed enterprise? - A talk exploring the story of the nearby Cistercian abbey with local historian Colin Bostock.

Tues 16 Feb - All the Fun of the Orbit - One of our popular speakers, Hugh Beggs, returns for a light hearted presentation on how the Earth's orbit affects our daily lives.

Thurs 11 Mar -  Not So Solid Ground - Colin Edmondson looks at the effect of salt mining at Marston and Northwich.  The talk and images are presented as a route from Lion Salt Works along the Trent & Mersey Canal to Marbury Lane.

Tues 27 April - Growing Up in Liverpool in 1950s - Jim Finn presents a nostalgic evening of music and chat relating to 1950s Liverpool - the music, school life, boys' brigade and holidays.

Tues 29 June - In the Footsteps of Scott and Shackleton - Peter Logan takes us on a journey to the Ross Sea by Russian ice-breaker with a visit to the Scott and Shackleton huts and on to South Georgia to visit Shackleton's grave.

All friends’ events are ticket only which must be booked in advance from the museum. The events take place at 7 for 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. £2 for non-members.

Film shows in ‘The Regalette’ mini cinema

The old regal cinemaWhy not come along to one of our film nights? Our mini cinema, which has a capacity of 43, has been nicknamed ‘The Regalette’ as it was refurbished with seats from the recently closed Regal Cinema. We have modern projection and sound equipment so if you fancy seeing films in unique surroundings then give us call. We hope to put together a diverse programme of recently released films, old classics and films relating to the local area. Book now to avoid disappointment!

On a remote Atlantic island, the residents have been eating sardines for far too long.  So, Flint Lockwood invents a machine which turns water into food.  Great animated entertainment for all the family. 
This particular film show is included in the museum admission price, but as spaces are limited, seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis on the day, no pre-booking for this particular daytime film.
