Above the Clouds - Mallory, Irvine and the Quest for Everest
11 September - 8 November
On 8 June 1924, George Mallory and Andrew (Sandy) Irvine were spotted during a clearing in the mist, 'going strong for the top' of Mount Everest. The intrepid mountaineers were never seen alive again. Did they succeed in reaching the summit, nearly 30 years before Edmund Hillary? This exhibition reflects on the lives and achievements of these two remarkable men who were both born in Cheshire. The exhibition will uncover their links with the county, their upbringing and their college years. The focus of the display will be the 1924 expedition and will be supported by original photographs and artefacts loaned from the Alpine Club, Magdalen College (Cambridge), Merton College (Oxford), the Royal Geographical Society and many other individuals and organisations. Some of the items found when Mallory's body was discovered in 1999 will also be featured. There will also be a display of replica 1924 mountaineering equipment loaned by the Mountaineering Heritage Trust and some modern climbing equipment loaned by Berghaus.
The exhibition will later tour to the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, until the end of January.
Northwich Shops
13 November 2009 - 10 January 2010
A nostalgic display of vibrant and intriguing material relating to shopping life in and around Northwich from days gone by. We will also bring the exhibition up to date with a focus on some local shops operating on the same high street, but under a different economic climate.
Lost Buildings of West Cheshire
15 January - 14 March 2010
An exhibition exploring a selection of interesting, but now vanished, buildings in the area. In a story spanning 2,000 years from the Iron Age to the 20th century we reveal why they disappeared. The displays feature a wealth of photographs and archaeological artefacts and will also look at the importance of preserving buildings and their stories for the future.
Never Had It So Good?
19 March - 16 June 2010
A fascinating portrait of everyday life in Northwich during the 1950s. With original artefacts, images and music from the period.
With Scott to the Pole
11 June - 5 September 2010
To commemorate the centenary of Captain Scott and his crew setting off from Britain to the South Pole, we will be showing a stunning selection of photographs from the expedition taken by Herbert Ponting. The exhibition offers a poignant and revealing glimpse of expedition life; icescapes; crew relaxing on deck; surveying; an impromptu hair cut. An absorbing visual diary that completes the familiar and well documented story of the race for the South Pole.
Admission to the special exhibitions is free.
